Types of Playing Styles in Texas Hold 'Em Poker

Once you know the essentials of Texas Hold 'Em, you can now start actually playing the game. It is natural to go after what you know and your instincts in your initial foray in to the game but overtime, you will notice that there are certain ways of playing the game that are bound to make one fail and there are those that will open one's path to success. Such ways of playing the game are called playing styles and it would benefit you if you become acquainted with them as knowledge of the different styles of playing the game will help one in reading other players at the table and obviously, in improving one's own style of play. There are generally two pairs of playing styles in the game. Players in the game can either be an Aggressive or a Passive one, in combination with being either a Loose or Tight player. Being an Aggressive player entails always playing on the offense. Aggressive players will be always at the forefront of raising and check-raising throughout the whole game and they will always try to boot out other players through sheer forceful betting. On the other side of the spectrum are the Passive players who are not that keen on raising bets and check-raising. They are content on staying with a call even if they have a winner of a hand. In another category altogether are the Loose and Tight players. Players can either be Loose ones, which are those that often play hands that are not worth playing at all, or Tight ones, which are those that only play the hands that have a decent chance of winning and fold on those which are average ones. As mentioned earlier, a player's style of play is basically a combination of being either an Aggressive/Passive player and being either a Loose/Tight player. Let's start with the Tight/Passive players. These players are the most conservative of the lot since they are both not keen on forceful betting and in playing a wide range of hands. This style of play is used when one is waiting until other players drop, the moment by which one will switch to a more hard-hitting style of play. Loose/Aggressive player are the complete opposite of the Tight/Passive ones. They play a wide range of cards and they constantly raise and check-raise even if they do not have much of hand. This style of play may seem to be the easiest path to failure but another style takes the cake for such title. Playing as a Loose/Passive player is the worst thing Texas Hold 'Em players can do to their poker careers and their bankroll. They are even worse than Loose/Aggressive players as they do not put the pressure on the table like such players do. Instead, they just call throughout the game even if they are playing with hands that are complete waste of time and chips. Tight/Aggressive players are the best of the lot since they combine the wise choosing of the hands to play of being tight and the forceful betting of being aggressive. Players should go for this style as it minimizes one's potential losses and maximizes one's opportunity for gains.
